We collect data in a limited number of forms on the Narrative Atlas Platform.
Data that you post on Narrative Atlas is shared with other participants in your private group (students and teachers at your school and at your partner school(s), MapWorks Learning staff, and other educators.) No data that we collect is shared with or sold to any third party. Your data can be deleted at any point by you, as well as your associated user account. On occasion we may include snippets of forum conversations in materials meant to describe and/or promote the Narrative Atlas platform. In such cases, all identifying information is removed or masked.
For the purposes of measuring user satisfaction and the educational effectiveness of the Narrative Atlas Platform, MapWorks Learning or allied experts may from time to time administer user surveys within Narrative Atlas. Aggregate findings may be shared with current or prospective financial supporters and educational partners. No personally identifying information will be shared.
The Narrative Atlas Platform does not employ any Analytics tool.
We do not share any personal data with anyone, other than participants in your private group on Narrative Atlas. As described above, the participants can include other students and teachers at your school and at your partner school(s) as well as MapWorks Learning staff and other educators.

You can also delete your account at anytime.
The Narrative Atlas Platform is a private, password-protected webspace. Users (Students, Teachers, Administrators) must be invited to Narrative Atlas and can only gain access using a unique login and password. Account passwords are salted and hashed and never recorded as plain-text. Details such as the user ID, name, and password are managed on the server-side, as well as the authentication cookies. Passwords are protected in the database using standard salting and stretching techniques and are randomly generated for each user. Existing sessions are destroyed upon logout. The Narrative Atlas Platform is served using an SSL certificate to ensure all data is secure as it is passed from a user’s browser to MapWorks Learning’s server. All content on the Narrative Atlas Platform, to include user postings, replies, discussions, photographs, and videos, are accessible only by current site users.
The accounts of Registered Users are password-protected. Please do not share your password with anyone, and remember to change your password from time to time, to help keep your account secure. Also, remember to sign off your account and close your browser window when you have finished your visit to the Narrative Atlas Platform. This is to help ensure that others cannot access your account, especially if you are sharing a computer with someone else or are using a computer in a public place such as a school computer lab, a library, or a cafe with an internet connection.
We have implemented appropriate technical and organizational security measures to protect your personal data from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, alteration, or destruction
Unfortunately, no data transmission over the internet and no data storage can be 100% secure. Consequently, while we will use reasonable efforts to safeguard your information against unauthorized access and disclosure, we do not warrant or guarantee the security of any information you transmit.
Both we and our partners maintain standard physical and electronic procedural safeguards that limit access to your Personally identifiable information (PII) and other data to employees (or people working on our behalf and pursuant to confidentiality obligations) who, through the course of standard business activities or provision of the Narrative Atlas Platform, need to access your PII or other data.
Our technology infrastructure is based in the United States. Accordingly, by using the Narrative Atlas platform, you consent to having your information, including PII, transferred to and processed in the United States.
Any student information collected by the Narrative Atlas Platform is provided by educators on behalf of students, or by students themselves.
In this Policy, “European Data Protection Legislation” means all applicable legislation relating to data protection in the European Economic Area (“EEA”), including the EU General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 (“GDPR”) and all laws adapted under or replacing the GDPR. Where this Policy uses terms specially defined in the GDPR, the GDPR definitions apply.
If the GDPR applies to you, your specific rights are listed immediately below.
If you are a resident of the EEA or Switzerland, the following applies:
Purposes of processing and legal basis for processing personal information: As explained above, we process personal information in various ways depending upon your use of the Narrative Atlas Platform. We process personal information on the following legal bases: (1) with your consent; (2) as necessary to perform our agreements; and (3) as necessary to our legitimate interests in providing services where those interests do not override your fundamental rights and freedom related to data privacy.
Individual Rights: If you are a resident of the EEA or Switzerland, you have certain rights under the GDPR. To verify your identity, we might need you to provide us with personal information prior to accessing any records containing information about you.
The right to access. You have the right to obtain information about our processing of your personal data and a copy of your personal data that we store.
The right to rectify your data. You have the right to request that we update your personal data if it is inaccurate or incomplete.
The right to request data erasure. You have the right to have your personal information erased from our files if the data is no longer necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, you withdraw your consent and no other legal basis for our processing your data exists, or your fundamental rights to data privacy and protection outweigh our legitimate interest in continuing our processing.
The right to restrict or object to processing. You have the right to restrict or object to our processing if we are processing your data based on legitimate interests or performance of a task in the public interest as an exercise of official authority (including profiling); using your data for direct marketing (including profiling); or processing your data for purposes of scientific or historical research and statistics.
The right to lodge a complaint. If you think we have processed your personal information unfairly or unlawfully, or we have not complied with your rights under GDPR, you have the right to complain to a national data protection authority.
If you are a school administrator or teacher in the EEA or Switzerland and want your students, who are over age thirteen (13), to use the Narrative Atlas Platform, including in conjunction with the establishment of an account for your school or a group of students at your school, you are solely responsible for complying with European Data Protection Legislation.

We may store and process your personal information in various countries worldwide including the United States. We may transfer and access such information from around the world, including the United States and other countries in which we operate or in which our hosted service providers’ cloud servers are located so that we can use the information as described in this Policy.
MapWorks Learning operates the Narrative Atlas Platform from the United States, which has not been deemed to offer adequate data protection by the European Commission. If you provide your personal information to us, be aware you are doing so on the basis that you explicitly consent to the transfer of your personal information outside the EEA. The potential consequence of you explicitly consenting to this is that there is a risk that your personal information will not be protected in a manner that complies with European Data Protection Legislation. You can withdraw your consent to such international transfers by contacting us at data@mapworkslearning.org, but if you do, we will not be able to contact you about our Programs and services in the future.
We use other companies, agents, and/or contractors to perform services on our behalf or to assist us with providing the Narrative Atlas Platform to you. For example, we may engage such service providers to provide website hosting infrastructure and IT services in order to personalize and optimize the Narrative Atlas Platform. In the course of providing such services to us, these other companies may have access to your information. We do not authorize these companies to use or disclose your PII, except in connection with providing the services we request from them.
